Immunity clause allows for impunity in governance – Clergy

Bishop Anthony Obinna of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Diocese has called for the removal of the immunity clause for political office holders.

Obinna, who made the call in his Easter massage on Saturday, argued that the immunity clause was solely responsible for impunity in governance.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that his message is entitled: “Impunity as a result of Immunity”.

He urged lawmakers to consider removing the clause in their next constitutional review.

“Immunity has made some set of individuals to be seen as special and more superior to others.

“It has equally made such people not to obey the law of the land any more, thereby, causing a big gap between the leaders and the masses,” he said.

He said that religious leaders should not be considered as politicians, but as those who criticise and make suggestions that can bring about positive changes.

Obinna also counselled Nigerians on peace and unity.

“We have to know that Nigeria can only be united if we embrace peace, unity and love regardless of tribe and religion.

“No nation survives if unity, love and peace are being threatened by fellow countrymen.”

He urged Christians to continue to be strong in their faith, especially in this season of the celebration of the death of Christ.
